History: Year Two. September 2005 - June 2006
Planning conference at Lycée Hubert Clément (Esch-sur-Alzette / Luxembourg)
Cygnaeus-lukio has succeeded to get grants from the EU to join the project. Danderyds Gymnasium from Sweden took part in the discussions. All together 11 schools were represented.
From investigation to implementation at school level
Schools agreed on the following:The integration of the theme into the curriculum depends on the possibilities of the schools and differs very much according to the national curriculum. Each school will act individually.
To implement the theme in the school policy the schools will focus on areas of improvement: Respect for the environment (the litter problem) and respect for the individual (issues related to anti-discrimination, anti-sexism, anti-bullying) and will involve students as much as possible.
Results of the implementation activities.
Many activities have been carried and more and more students have been involved. It has shown that the general theme basic values can be applied on a wide variety of activities:
A few examples of projects and activities of the different schools:
Projects on Charity, Bullying, Health and Welfare, Student Democracy, Waste and Litter, Human Rights, Respect for the Environment, Sustainability, Education of Choices, Influence of Internet on the Behaviour of Students.
Didactical units have been developed ("keys for life").
The litter project (see the best practices of the schools) has been dealt with by 5 schools.
They have linked the general SDP theme "Basic Values" to a concrete topic of daily school practice and have developed a policy on litter and waste at school level. Students were very much involved in this process.
Some schools have started the process of creating school charters on "Basic Values".
Evaluation meeting at Instituto de Educación Secundaria 'Miguel Catalán' (Zaragoza, Spain)
Participants exchanged the experiences of the projects related to basic values, the proceedings how to implement basic values into the school policy (charter, mission state) and how more and more students could be involved in the project.
The main conclusion is that the project has to fit into the school policy to be successful. Is is very important to give enough space and freedom to the individual schools to deal with the project in their own way.In almost all schools the project has been supported very actively by the board.
The evaluation meeting coincided with the Conference of the Europroject Network 'Education without frontiers'.
'Aqua' was the overall theme of the conference.
Zaragoza will be the seat of the International Exhibition on Water 2008.
The aspects of water, such as water consumption, regulations, ecological issues, industrial or recreational uses, are of general interest for every school.
The IES Miguel Catalán developed within the SDP the 'AquaŽ project to make students more aware of a suitable use of water resources in order to keep a sustainable development. This overall theme has been very well integrated into to the "Basic Values" project.
The main activity carried out was the research about one important river of each European region in which every school is situated (October 2005 - April 2006).
Every school has made an essay and a poster dealing with an important river in their country - region - town.
This research has been presented at the Zaragoza Conference.

Posters on the rivers in the countries of the delegations
The headmistress Ma Pilar Torrijo Cascante opened the conference
